Day 1
Bucharest – Ruse – Rusesnki Lom – Veliko Tarnovo – Bucharest
In the morning you’ll meet your guide and you’ll set off to Bulgaria.
Crossing the only bridge over The Danube River along the Bulgarian border, you’ll enter a new country.
The first visit in Bulgaria is The Rock-hewn Churches of Ivanovo, located on the valley of the Rusenski Lom River. They are a group of monolithic churches, chapels and monasteries hewn out of solid rock and completely different from other monastery complexes in Bulgaria. The monastery complex owes much of its fame to the 13th and the 14th centuries frescoes, preserved in 5 of the churches, which are seen as wonderful examples of Bulgarian mediaeval art.
The driving continues all the way to Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital of Bulgaria. You’ll admire the spectacular Tzarevetz fortress, which was the seat of the Bulgarian kings from the Medieval times. One of the most remarkable sights in Veliko Tarnovo is the panoramic view of the old town with the houses perched on the cliffs above each other.
In the last part of the day, you’ll be taken to the
picturesque village of Arbanassi, located 4 km from
Veliko Tarnovo. It was a settlement with special privileges given by the Sultan and home of rich merchants. Many old houses and beautiful churches date back to 17th and 18th centuries thus giving Arbanassi the status of a protected architectural area.
After this last visit you’ll be taken back to Bucharest.
End of the tour.
